TOOLS M2: Debt Collection Sample Letters

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act ("FDCPA") is the main federal law that governs debt collection practices. The FDCPA prohibits debt collection companies from using abusive, unfair or deceptive practices to collect debts from you. The sample letters below are provided by the Federal Trade Commission. These sample letters are not legal advise. Use these sample letters if you want to tell a debt collector the following:

  • you aren't responsible for the debt
  • you want more information
  • you want them to stop contacting you
  • you want them to only contact your lawyer
  • you want to instruct them how they can contact you

How to use the sample letters:

  1. Read the background information
  2. Fill in your information on the sample letter and edit it as needed to fit your situation. Delete parts that aren't relevant for your situation.
  3. Print and mail the letter. Be sure to keep a copy for your records and consider sending the letter by certified mail or another method by which you can establish when the letter is received by the intended recipient.
