Disputing Errors
Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have the right to dispute billing errors and errors on your credit report. To dispute a charge, contact the credit reporting agency in writing what information you believe is inaccurate on your report and contact the information provider in writing. Mail a letter to your creditor at the address given for "billing inquiries".
Use the sample letters below, provided by the Federal Trade Commission, to dispute the following:
- A debit card charge
- Billing errors
- Errors on your credit report
- Errors on your credit report from information providers
These sample letters are not legal advise. Be sure to keep a copy for your records and consider sending the letter by certified mail or another method by which you can establish when the letter is received by the intended recipient.
